Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

Principal Investigator, ASPIRE

Daniel Frey is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His research concerns use of statistics to improve design through planning experiments and inference from data. He is currently Head of the Design and Manufacturing Area within Mechanical Engineering. He was formerly Faculty Research Director of D-Lab.

Professor Frey conducts research in robust design and statistics. He has shown that an adaptive approach to robust design, when coupled with informed engineering choices, is superior to current methods used in industry. He served as a founding co-Director of the International Design Center at the Singapore University of Technology and Design and as Principal Investigator of the Comprehensive Initiative on Technology Evaluation.

Professor Frey is also active in design pedagogy and is a frequent speaker at national and international workshops in engineering design and education. Dan holds a PhD in mechanical engineering from MIT, an MS in mechanical engineering from the University of Colorado, and a BS in aeronautical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
